How to Post a Video to Instagram: Size, Length & Format

Last updated: June 12, 2026

Posted to Instagram only to find the top and bottom cut off, the quality poor, or the upload rejected? Usually the aspect ratio, length or format doesn't match the destination. This guide covers each, and how to fix it.

Recommended aspect ratio by destination

DestinationAspect ratioLength (approx.)
Feed (regular post)1:1 (square) or 4:5 (portrait)up to 60 min (a few dozen sec in practice)
Reels9:16 (full vertical)up to ~90 sec
Stories9:16 (full vertical)short per clip

※ Specs can change. MP4 (H.264) is the safe format.

Stop the edges getting cut: match the aspect ratio

Upload a landscape (16:9) video to Feed or Reels as-is and parts get auto-cropped, losing what you wanted. The fix is to crop to the target ratio first. Our crop tool sets 1:1, 4:5 or 9:16 in one tap.

Make it look its best

Instagram re-compresses videos after upload. If the source is too low quality, it looks worse afterward. When cropping or converting, don't drop the resolution too far, and match the recommended ratio exactly for the cleanest result.

FAQ

Q. Can I use a landscape video for Reels?
A. You can, but you'll get bars or cropping. Crop to 9:16 first for best results.
Q. Is my video uploaded?
A. No — our tools process everything in your browser.
Q. Can I do this on my phone?
A. Yes — crop/convert in your phone's browser, then post in the Instagram app.
